Benefits
The long-term contract with Capital & Coast District Health Board to manage Wellington Hospital's energy plants and supply the hospital's steam, hot water, chilled water and natural gas.
The Hospital's energy plants were leased, managed and operated by Energy for Industry. The plants included steam and hot water boilers and electric and absorption type chillers.
Outsourcing
The outsourcing contract enabled energy efficiency projects worth millions of dollars in energy savings to be initiated and removed the complexities of operating and maintaining the energy centre from the hospital.
An important aspect of the contract was to incentivise both parties to explore energy efficiency opportunities and to share the financial savings. Compared to benchmark consumption in the late 1990s, Wellington Hospital cut energy costs by 30 percent, despite some significant new building projects during that time, and the fact that the use of some hospital facilities intensified greatly.
"Energy for Industry is an excellent partner. They have been quick to work with us on this concept, they actively support and facilitate the energy efficiency work, and they provide useful technical expertise. You might assume that, as our energy supplier, they would be more focused on increasing our energy consumption, but they are even contributing to the capital cost of this energy efficiency work." - Andrew Paterson former C&CDHB Manager, Technical Services.
